I have a 970 with approx 400 hrs that cuts out the engine briefly on an intermittent basis. If I don't hit the clutch it'll shut down and I can then restart it as if nothing happened. If I press the clutch it won't stall and if I'm bush-hogging the momentum of the cutter will usually keep it from stalling. It's as if the swithch is being turned off for a split second. Has anyone had experience with this problem in this type of tractor?

DOES THE 970 HAVE A SEAT SAFTEY SWITCH? I WOULD JUMP THE SAFTEY SWITCH AND SEE IF THE PROBLEM QUITS. ALSO IF YOU JUMP THE SAFETY SWITCH WITH A REAL SMALL AMPERAGE FUSE AND IF THE SWITCH EVER OPEN IT WILL BLOW THE FUSE BECAUSE THE POWER TRIED TO FLOW THRU THE FUSE AND IT WILL BLOW BECAUSE THE AMPRAGE IS HIGHER THEN THE RATING OF THE FUSE. ....

I have a 970 and if I lean to the side in the seat the engine will cut off from the safety switch. It sounds like this might be happening to you. When you push the clutch back in, you are then firmly on the seat and everything works normally. Try jumping the switch and see if it solves the problem. ....
